Tindamax for Bacterial Vaginosis - What FDA Says about It?

In the country USA, amebic liver abscess, intestinal amebiasis, various kinds of intestinal infections, giardiasis, trichomoniasis and bacterial Vaginosis are treated through the drug Tindamax that is a 5 nitroimidazole 2nd generation compound. Tindamax for Bacterial Vaginosis and trichomoniasis is CDC approved. USA has approved it for use in May 2004.

Some of the side effects of Tindamax include low incidences of vomiting and nausea, a bitter or metallic after taste, anorexia, nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, general weakness, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, abdominal discomfort etc. Around a little more than 1% patients experienced these adverse side effects.

However, it is best for pregnant patients to stay away from Tindamax. Women who are in the 1st trimester of their pregnancy should not take Tindamax.

Tindamax for Bacterial Vaginosis

As you know around 10 million women in USA alone visit the doctor’s chamber to get treated for bacterial Vaginosis – the most widespread and commonest form of vaginitis in women of reproductive age. In 2007, the U.S. FDA has approved the use of tinidazole or Tindamax for treating BV. After almost a decade, FDA has approved the use of Tindamax as the 1st of the new lot of oral therapies for treating bacterial Vaginosis.

Oral treatment with Tindamax takes a shorter time. A patient requires fewer doses of this drug daily. And compared to other contemporary drugs, one can tolerate this drug better and more easily.

Perhaps you don’t know, but trichomoniasis and BV are highly interrelated and overlap with each other often. The only drug FDA has approved to treat both trichomoniasis and BV is Tindamax.

Those who suffer from BV are administered 2 tablets measuring 1 gram in total for a total of 5 days. The tablets have to be taken once everyday for those 5 days. Or you may take 4 tablets measuring 2 grams in total once every day for a couple of days. To put it more clearly, the total number of treatment doses is reduced by more than half when treatment is done through Tindamax therapy instead of through any other conventional and recommended oral treatment.

It also improves the patient’s compliance which is another important factor for getting the seal of approval from FDA. BV patients who were administered Tindamax reported side effects like low incidences of gastrointestinal problems, nausea, vomiting and metallic after taste. Rate of BV cure with Tindamax oscillates between 27.4% and 36.8%.
